California Department of Conservation
Research by The California Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling showed that a high percentage of individuals toss their bottles and cans in the trash when they are away from home. As agency principal at DanaForan Advertising, Kathy Dana was instrumental in developing the strategy that if recycling bins were made more convenient in “away from home” locations, recycling would increase.
Serving the Department of Conservation and in partnership with Keep California Beautiful, the Local Conservation Corps and 32 participating service stations in Northern California, an infrastructure of advertising, public relations, collection, maintenance and reporting was created and tested. An average 400 pounds of recycled bottles and cans per week were collected. Proof that the DOC could move ahead with confidence with an “away from home” component to beverage container recycling.
